On your site you specifically say that your comping has radically improved/changed since you discovered the book “The Barry Harris Harmonic Method for Guitar”. I have trouble adding interest, motion or spice to my own comping. I know most of the guitar (comping) chord voicings and I get by, but it sounds really vanilla. Question by Jack Mitchell (ChiangRai Thailand) Barry Harris Harmony and Harmonic Method for Guitar (Alan Kingstone) I don't even know what questions to ask; but I have been studying jazz a while now and I never heard anyone say 2-5 was obsolete. Hey guys,

I have this little trick I picked up somewhere along the way that I use quite a bit. It's hitting one diminished chord (either as a passing chord, or as a 7b9 version of a V chord) and then sliding it up quickly in m3rds before the next chord. It's nice, it adds movement and color, and tension -- people do it all the time, I'm sure you're familiar with it. But lately I've been learning about the diminished 6 scale from Barry Harris stuff on youtube, and I'm going at it slowly on piano. but with my guitar ability being much quicker and easier for me to see chords, I'm wondering if someone could explain how that relates to this specific jazz guitar sliding diminished chords technique. Is it essentially putting a M6 chord based off a whole tone below in between each dim chord slide that would result in these Barry Harris 'movements' ? Like for instance, lets say my progression is typically C∆7 - Dm7. I would maybe do some passing chord slide things in there, in the right point of a song - so my real progression would be something like C∆7 - C#dim (invert twice in a row maybe) - Edim - Gdim then an inversion of a Dm7 close by like Dm7/A (2nd inversion). Would 'Barry Harris-ing' that be just, peppering in a BM6 chord and it's equivelent inversions right behind the Diminished chord hit? So for instance the progression could become

C∆7 - C#dim - BM6/D# (1st Inversion) - Edim - BM6/F# (2nd Inversion) - Gdim - Dm7/A?

Am I on the right track with my understanding of these 'movements' and how to use them in a progression?

Thanks!

Harris

Also any examples you like of this kinda thing in songs are appreciated. Even in R&B, pop, soul, hip hop, jazz whatever genre you've heard it in.

Hi Alan,. Just received a copy of your book. I have been fascinated by this method. He and Barry have been very successful with the diminished approach. Pianist Barry Harris’ method which outlines a more summarized, yet in-depth, approach to jazz harmony. Method adapted for guitar by Alan Kingstone. Thread: Kingstone/Harris Harmonic Method for Guitar I know there is a dedicated Barry Harris thread, but most of it is focussed on single line improvisation. Alan’s book doesn’t really seem focussed on that (although maybe .

Imagine, a system for learning jazz harmony that actually embraces the concept of improvisation. What I mean is that a theory works for a vaary, but as our knowledge progresses, that same theory becomes bogged down with more and more addendum and exceptions to keep it in agreement with known reality.

I’ve only worked through this a little bit along with the similar Roni Ben Hur DVD “Chordability” and for me this really fills in some gaps. I was already familiar with the bebop major and bebop melodic minor scales Mark Levinebut didn’t realize that harmonizing them yields these 3 chords!

You have laid it out so beautifully and I am going to work on it.

No disrespect for the author or Barry Harris, but it didn’t make it for me! Its the rare guitarist that can create the sort of lush solo work that is commonplace in the jazz piano world.

Does this start to sound like a cumbersome and outdated theory for working in real time as a musician?
